What is a Patio?
A patio is a hardscape surface outside of your home on the ground level of your property. Patio designs frequently include outdoor furniture and other features such as fire pits, outdoor kitchens, water features, and plant life.
Benefits of Outdoor Living
- Enjoy the outdoors all year long
- Personalize your living space to fit your needs
- Easily entertain friends and relatives
- Add property value and curb appeal
Patios can be designed and built using a number of different materials, including but not limited to…
The most common material for the modern patio, concrete pavers are individual slabs that can come in any desired size and texture. These pieces are fit together to form the patio area.
Pavers are extremely popular for their cost and flexibility – concrete can be made into any color and can mimic other materials visually, allowing it to fit seamlessly into your home’s vibe, whatever style it may be.
Flagstone is real, quarried stone that can be fit together either in even, precise squares or in jagged pieces for a more natural look. The aesthetic of flagstone makes it a very popular choice, combined with its low level of required maintenance.
If you live in a historic property or want to provide your home with a historic look, natural brick is an excellent choice. These clay bricks can be laid on top of concrete to increase durability. Natural brick is sturdy and its color won’t fade over time.
Pea gravel provides your home with a beautiful rustic aesthetic and looks perfect alongside an informal campfire. Gravel is one of the most cost-effective materials for a patio and is a popular option given that they drain easily during wetter months.
Patio Cover Ideas
Add some shade to your patio with a number of different covering options.
A pavilion is a free-standing closed roof over a patio. Pavilions are a popular choice for adding shading to an outdoor patio because it provides complete shade from the sun during the summer and protection from rain and snow, turning your outdoor living area into a space that can be used year-round.
A slatted pergola adds a sense of coziness along with partial shade for you and your guests. Screens or plants can be incorporated in the spaces between the slats to add more shading if desired.
Pergolas can be made of wood like cedar for a rustic feel, or from white PVC for a more contemporary style.
Another way to incorporate shade to your backyard patio is to install tall, leafy trees that provide shade during the daytime. Landscaping can ground your space while adding a natural ambiance for you to enjoy.
