Erik Moden
Erik Moden, Owner, Manager and Designer, brings a deep foundation in functional, purposeful design paired with decades of hands-on residential experience.
Erik has been professionally designing outdoor living spaces since 2003, but his passion for creating began much earlier. A lifelong student of architecture and construction, Erik has been drawn to building and design since childhood, often exploring construction sites simply to learn how things come together. As a teenager growing up in Ohio, he started his first lawn maintenance business, which quickly evolved into a small design-build landscape company. That early entrepreneurial spark set the tone for a career built on craftsmanship, curiosity, and thoughtful problem-solving.
After earning his Bachelor of Arts in Landscape Architecture from West Virginia University, Erik spent years working alongside some of the top residential designers in the Washington, DC area, expanding his technical expertise and refining a design style rooted in function first. He co-founded Outdoor Space in 2009 with Evan Clower.
Erik believes great outdoor spaces must work beautifully before they look beautiful. From sightlines and access points to symmetry, balance, and flow, every element in Erik’s designs has a purpose. Landscaping is then used to soften the home and bring the entire space together.
Erik specializes in custom outdoor environments blending multiple living elements. His favorite projects often include layered spaces, such as screened porches that transition into patios with fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, and open lawn areas designed for both entertaining and everyday family life. He enjoys working across a wide range of styles, from contemporary and modern farmhouse to rustic and traditional, always tailoring each design to the homeowner rather than a trend.
What truly sets Erik apart is his ability to listen. He takes the time to ask the right questions (lots of them!) and understand how his clients live, relax, and gather, ensuring every project reflects their vision and lifestyle.
When he’s not designing or building, Erik enjoys spending time outdoors with his family, staying active, and playing guitar. He lives in Purcellville, Virginia with his wife, two sons, daughter, and their pets.
